Staff and pupils at Dean Trust Wigan have successfully achieved the first stage of the Rights Respecting Schools Award.
The school is now Bronze: Rights Committed.

The UNICEF award scheme aims to put children’s rights at the heart of schools and embed rights of a child in daily school life to give children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.

The UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK) works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive.

UNICEF UK said “The Award recognises a school’s achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice within the school and beyond.”

Samantha Webster, Deputy Headteacher at Dean Trust Wigan said ‘We have worked very hard as a community to ensure children look after their wellbeing, be active participants, develop healthy relationships and increase self-esteem. We are beginning to see the positive impact of these actions on children and on the school’s ethos, practice and environment.’
